About BUILD

BUILD is a voluntary organisation, based in Radford, and established in 1991 as a vehicle to community self reliance and independence. BUILD is founded on the concept of “Each one Teach one”, regenerating the skills, positive attitudes and knowledge base from its adult community back to the young. On this basis, BUILD has evolved a number of initiatives to meet the needs of the communities it serves.
These include:
(1) Mentoring
Seeks to stimulate achievement and ambition and personal growth of young people from the African-Caribbean community. The service is aimed towards those who attend schools or who have recently fallen out of formal education. It is invaluable service to young people from the BME community, shaping their future, giving them realistic targets to achieve long-term relationships with role models within their community.
(2) Re-Build
This is a mentoring project aimed at assisting and supporting refugees and asylum seekers who want to continue their education and locate training and employment opportunities through the provision of information, advice and guidance. The project is funded by The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.
(3) Primetime
Aimed at providing a support service to young people, parents and teachers in a primary schools environment. Works in close partnership with school staff, parents and pupils alike, providing an in-depth analysis to assess and identify problems they may face and formulate ways in which they can overcome them. Parents are also helped to have a direct input into their children’s educational life and working with the school to establish trust and encourage learning throughout the community.
(4) Cross Cultural Network
Facilitates and supports the development of networks between ethnic, faith and community groups that encourages greater cohesion and community feeling in neighbourhoods where tensions may currently exist.
(5) Social Inclusion and Diversity
Carries out research, training and consultancy in the public and private sectors, gives advice on compliance with the race relations (amendment) Act 2000 and also equal opportunities policy statements and equalities schemes.
(6) Black-TEC
Technology training scheme aimed at young people in the BME communities, but also disadvantaged young people in mainstream society. Students will achieve fully developed IT skills in multimedia technology and website development. Students completing the course will be confident enough to launch their own websites and multimedia projects.
(7) Black Awareness and Development (BAD)
Deals with the issues of young Black and Asian people. Delivers workshops to pre and post 16 year old young people to make the transition from school to college or employment more comfortable. The workshops operate on a basis of group mentoring where issues of identify, self awareness and looking to the future are discussed.
