Community Cohesion

The Guidance on Community Cohesion produced by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, Home Office, Commission for Racial Equality and the Inter-Faith Network provides a definition of community cohesion:

Background

"A cohesive community is one where there is a common vision and a sense of belonging for all communities; the diversity of people?s different backgrounds and circumstances are appreciated and positively valued; those from different backgrounds have similar life opportunities; and strong and positive relationships are being developed between people from different backgrounds in the workplace, in schools and within neighbourhoods."

Leicester City Council and its partners have been developing and delivering a number of community cohesion projects over the last few years. In February 2003 the Home Office announced that Leicester had became one of 15 national Pathfinder Areas due to the success of its Resolving Differences projects, the Council of Faiths, Leicester Mercury Advisory Group, youth conferences, the Voice of Young People unit which includes the Young People’s Council, Youth VOICE, and various initiatives to help and settle new arrivals, and deliver cross-cultural activities for young people.

Pathfinder Areas will bring people and organisations together to build community cohesion. The strength in Leicester’s success to date in the ability of its formal and informal networks delivering community cohesion was highlighted in the base line assessment produced by IDeA, Taking forward Community Cohesion in Leicester, and formed the basis of the Pathfinder Action Plan.

The 18 month programme became live on 1st April with a partnership of Leicester City Council, Voluntary Action Leicester and Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland Community Foundation having joint responsibility for managing the finances of the Programme which come from three funding streams.
