The National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) is a non-profit making organisation dedicated to ending prejudice and discrimination, whether because of nationality, race, gender, religion, class, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, occupation or life circumstance. NCBI have been running skills-based experiential training in Leicester for over 15 years and our workshops and training use emotional healing to reduce prejudice and to resolve inter-group conflict - Healing into Action. We won the Gold Standard Award for Best Practice in Education at the 2002 British Diversity Awards for the Pathfinder Friends Against Bullying and Community Facilitators work, including the Welcoming Diversity & Prejudice Reduction workshop programme which has picked up Silver Awards at the BDAs in previous years. As far as possible, we utilise the skills of our Community Facilitators (aged between 15 and 25 years) to assist in the design and delivery of training programmes for new young people and adults.

In the time that we have been running our training in Leicester there has been very little uptake from Leicester city council staff, and people from the community and voluntary sectors have often struggled to attend because of the fees. At the consultative meetings between the announcement that the Local Authority had secured Pathfinder status, and prior to the writing of the action plan, there was a clear call from several agencies for training on community cohesion issues (this included local authority personnel and people within the local authority).
